To ensure that you heal correctly and do not experience any complications, Southern Minnesota Endodontics offers the following home care instructions. Please follow all instructions provided by our endodontists as closely as possible. If you have questions about our endodontics home care instructions please call us.
When you complete your endodontic treatment, the treated area may remain numb for 1-2 hours immediately following your appointment. We recommend that you avoid eating during that time.
Your tooth and the surrounding gum tissue may be tender for several days as a result of your treatment and the previous condition of your tooth. This tenderness is normal, and will go away as your tooth and surrounding tissues heal. Avoid chewing in this area until it begins to feel better.
You should continue your regular oral hygiene routine throughout the healing process.
Remember what type of restoration our endodontists placed at the time of your treatment. The type of restoration you received will determine when, or if, you need to return to your family dentist. For example, if you received a permanent restoration, further treatment may not be necessary. If our endodontic specialists placed a temporary restoration, you will need to follow several extra instructions until you return to your dentist for a restoration.
If you received a temporary restoration, avoid drinking hot beverages or chewing on that tooth until your restoration has had time to harden. To avoid cracking the tooth, avoid heavy chewing until you receive your permanent restoration. Bear in mind that temporary restorations are not intended to last more than 30 days. If you fail to visit your dentist to receive your final restoration, your tooth could be fractured or re-infected, resulting in the loss of the tooth and requiring you to undergo additional treatments.
Your general dentist will receive a complete report of treatment. Included as part of your treatment with us is a follow-up appointment to evaluate your healing process and ensure that no complications have developed. No additional fee will be charged for this checkup.
If you experience discomfort, you can take ibuprofen (Advil), aspirin, or acetaminophen (Tylenol) as directed. If you experience discomfort that cannot be controlled with medications, or if you notice any swelling, please contact our office immediately, day or night. If you need to call after hours, please have your pharmacy number available.
